Description
Second order linear differential equations are widely used in science and engineering fields, for example in the spring-mass system and RLC series circuit. In this course, students will learn to solve the homogeneous equations with constant coefficients. In particular, we will solve the homogeneous equations where their characteristic equations may have real and distinct roots, real and repeated roots or complex conjugate roots. Subsequently, solving the nonhomogeneous equations with constant coefficients is the second topic of the course. Here, students will learn to solve the nonhomogeneous equations with constant coefficients by using the methods of undetermined coefficients and variation of parameters.
Micro Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
i. find the solution for homogeneous equations
ii. find the solution for nonhomogeneous equations by using the undetermined coefficients method
iii. find the solution for nonhomogeneous equations by using the variation of parameters method
